“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”

This verse is not meant to make you nervous, but honest. God is not asking you to doubt your value. He wants you to look within and see who lives there. The real question is not,

  • Have I done enough?

The question is

  • Is Christ in me?

When you are called to examine yourself, it is not a reason to panic. It is an invitation to peace. When you see Christ in you, fear fades away.

What it means to examine yourself

Examining yourself means being honest with God about your heart. It is not about criticizing yourself or making promises you cannot keep. It is simply asking, “Lord, is Jesus living in me?”

Faith is not something you have to create or perform. Faith means resting. It is trusting that what Jesus did on the cross is enough. It is letting His finished work bring peace to your heart.

When you examine yourself, you are not measuring your faith. You are looking for a Person. The real test is not how much you believe, but who you believe in. If Christ lives in you, that is enough.

So ask Him quietly, “Lord, show me the truth about myself.” The Holy Spirit will not shame you. He will show you Jesus.

Where people often look instead of to Christ

Many people believe they are right with God because of their actions, not because of who lives in them.

Some trust their religion. Jesus said,

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven… And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me” Matthew 7:21, 23.

Others trust their good works.

“All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6.

Paul said he wanted to be

“found in him, not having mine own righteousness… but that which is through the faith of Christ” Philippians 3:9.

Some trust their feelings.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9.

And some think they are fine because life seems good. But Jesus said to the church in Laodicea,

“Thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods… and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked” Revelation 3:17.

All these things can mislead us: religion, good works, even spiritual feelings. But Christ never misleads. His life in you is the only true sign.

What it means to be born again

Jesus told Nicodemus,

“Ye must be born again” John 3:7.

Being born again does not mean slowly improving yourself. It means receiving a completely new life.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16.

When you trust Him, God gives you His own life. He does not just improve your old self. He makes you new. Salvation is not a process; it is a miracle. It happens the moment you put your faith in Christ.

The evidence of His life in you

The evidence does not save you, but where there is life, there will be fruit.

You will see sin differently.

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him” 1 John 3:9.

That means you cannot live comfortably in sin anymore.

You will want purity.

“Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” 1 John 3:3.

You will love God’s Word.

“Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments” 1 John 2:3.

The psalmist said,

“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day” Psalm 119:97.

You will love God’s people.

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God” 1 John 4:7.

Jesus said,

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” John 13:35.

When you drift, you will feel His loving correction.

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth” Hebrews 12:6.

Correction is not rejection. It is proof that you belong to Him.

Ahnd deep inside, His Spirit will speak to yours.

“And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him… The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” 1 John 3:19; Romans 8:16.

These things are not a checklist to prove you are doing the right thing. They are signs that Jesus lives in you. The focus is not on your actions, but on His presence.

How to ask the right questions

If you take this verse to heart, ask yourself the right questions.

  • What am I really trusting in: myself or Jesus?

  • Has there been a time when I stopped trusting myself and rested in what He did for me?

  • When I sin, do I sense His Spirit pulling me back to Himself?

  • Do I care about His Word, not just as rules but as His voice?

  • Do I love others because His love is in me?

Do not ask,

“Am I good enough?” I

nstead, ask,

“Is Christ in me?”

The first question leads to fear, but the second brings peace.

If you are not sure

If you find yourself thinking, “I do not know if Christ lives in me,” do not despair. This is the time to look to Him.

Do not try to fix yourself first. Do not chase after a feeling. Look to the One who finished the work.

Pray from your heart, “Lord Jesus, I cannot save myself. My works and my religion cannot make me right with You. I believe You died for me and rose again. Come live in me.”

He promised,

“Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” John 6:37.

The moment you come to Him, He comes to live in you. That is salvation. That is being born again.

If you know He lives in you.

If you belong to Christ but still have doubts, remember this: the same Jesus who saved you lives in you now. Assurance does not come from looking at yourself, but from looking at Him.

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life” 1 John 5:13.

When you fail, talk to Him. When you doubt, remember His promise. When you feel weak, remind yourself that His life is now your life. The Christian life is not about you trying to live for Him, but about Him living His life through you.

A closing thought

Examining yourself is not about passing a test. It is about discovering a Person. The more you see Him, the more your questions disappear.

He does not shine His light to shame you. He shines it so you can see that He is already with you.

If you realize you have never trusted Him, now is the time to say yes. If you already know Him, let that truth settle deep in your heart.

You do not have to try to get closer to Him. He is already in you.

You are not being asked to prove your faith. You are invited to rest in the One who lives in you. Christ in you is the assurance you have been searching for.
