Every spiritual leader needs to understand the difference between grace and law. Everything about the ministry will hinge on your understanding. You will accuse and condemn if you focus on rules like the Pharisees. If you focus on grace, you will rescue the perishing. Consider with me the differences between the law and grace.

  1. The law gives us commandments and regulations, while grace reveals God’s unconditional love and redemption.

  2. The law tells me what I must do, while grace reveals what God has already done.

  3. Grace shows the completed work of Christ on the cross while the law gives rules and requirements I can never fulfill.

  4. Law exposes my sin and failure, while grace extends God’s rescue and redemption.

  5. The law condemns while grace converts.

  6. The law focuses on my performance, while grace transforms my heart and renews my mind.

  7. The law demands justice, while grace offers mercy.

  8. The law puts me in slavery while grace gives me freedom.

  9. The law is about me trying to, while grace shows me what Jesus Christ has done.

  10. The law operates in fear, while grace finds its foundation in love.

  11. The law calls for rules, while grace invites to a relationship.

  12. The law condemns, while grace justifies.

Understanding law and grace will profoundly affect your leadership role and how you interact with those under your care.

  1. Will you impose rigid rules and regulations or extend grace and understanding because you recognize what is happening while seeing what could be?

  2. Will you focus on what people do or help them grow?

  3. Will you extend mercy and compassion or require results and obedience?

  4. Will your leadership promote a culture of freedom or submission?

  5. Will you lead out of love or control through fear and coercion?

  6. Will you invite them into a relationship or remind them of the rules and requirements?

  7. Will you condemn or affirm?

  8. Will you recognize their value or remind them of yours?

  9. Will you provide mentorship and guidance or neglect and abandon?

  10. What type of environment will you cultivate?

  11. Will you expect or congratulate?

  12. Will you condemn or promote growth?

Take these meditations and work through your leadership plan. Decide if you will lead or boss. Will you demand or encourage? Will you love and lead or command and instill fear? Today, you can decide how you will treat people under your leadership.
