In John 5:34, Jesus said,

That statement was shocking in His day. In a culture where a man’s worth was measured by what others said about him, Jesus dared to live free from the shifting verdict of public opinion. He was not swayed by applause, nor did rejection crush him. He lived for the Father’s voice alone.

Jesus knew how quickly people could turn from waving palm branches to shouting for crucifixion. Their opinions were too shallow to build a life upon, so He anchored Himself in the Father’s unchanging love.

That same freedom is ours. The Bible says,

The message is clear: living for man’s approval is slavery. Living for God’s approval is freedom.

Yet if we are honest, most of us are still tangled in the snare of man’s opinion. In today’s world, it is not the synagogue or marketplace that defines our worth. It is a glowing screen in our hands. We scroll and post, measuring ourselves by likes, shares, and comments. Did they notice me? Do they approve? But Jesus warned of people.

That addiction to human applause is still alive today, and it is quietly stealing our joy.

Scripture calls this the fear of man, and Proverbs 29:25 says plainly,

Living for people’s approval is like chasing the wind. You will never catch it, and you will exhaust yourself trying. But when you rest in the Father’s love, you step off the treadmill of performance and into the freedom of grace.

Think about it. God declared His love for His Son before He had performed a single miracle.

That same verdict now rests on you in Christ. The Father is not waiting for your flawless performance to love you. He already calls you His beloved. That changes everything.

And here is the beauty. When you stop needing something from people, you are finally free to love them. You are no longer using others to prop up your identity. You can forgive when they hurt you, bless when they curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. You no longer demand vindication, because you trust God to be your defender.

But be warned. Living for God’s approval alone takes courage. It means you will sometimes walk against the current, misunderstood, criticized, and even despised. But you do not have to fear, because the only verdict that matters is the one God speaks over your life. As Isaiah 51:12 says,

Here is the deeper truth. The longing you feel for affirmation is not wrong. It is misplaced. You were made for approval, but not the shallow approval of men. You were created for the smile of your Father in heaven. The praise of people is like a shadow, fading as quickly as it comes. The approval of God is substance, weight, glory. To live for man’s applause is like trying to warm yourself by the picture of a fire painted on a wall. To live for God’s approval is to sit before the blazing sun.

And one day, that longing will be answered fully. Scripture promises a day when those who are faithful will hear Him say,

That moment will outweigh a thousand lifetimes of human rejection. The deepest ache of your soul will be met with the eternal delight of your Father.

So let me put it simply. You cannot please everyone. Stop trying. Their applause is fleeting, but God’s approval is forever. Do not waste your life chasing the cheers of men who vanish like smoke. Live today for an audience of One.
