The oil used for healing
The anointing with oil refers to doctoring or healing the wounds on sheep. The Shepherd constantly monitors His sheep to meet their needs.
You must know that I AM is your Shepherd if you are hurting physically or emotionally. He heals wounds. It doesn’t matter what has happened in the past or what is happening right now; there is hope. Your Shepherd will never leave you. He is always healing us, or we wouldn’t even be able to continue on.
When the sheep is hurt, the Shepherd applies oil to the wound. The oil helps cure the wound, keeps insects from bothering it, and protects the sheep from torment.
The Shepherd even pours on the oil to keep the male sheep, the rams, from hurting each other when they charge and butt to establish dominance.
This will be so beautiful when we see what that oil symbolizes.
Don’t forget how the good Samaritan poured oil and wine on the wounds of the person he was helping. Luke 10:34. The 70 that Jesus sent out to preach also anointed the sick with oil. Mark 6:13.
James told his listeners to anoint with oil when they prayed for the sick. James 5:14-15.
The oil is used to remind David who he is
In the cave, hiding and fearing for your life, it would be easy to forget who you are. All the garbage happening to you would bring up all your past and failures like a flood.
Doubt and fear attack because of your circumstances. You are dealing with tragedy, financial loss, sickness, wayward children, or a disintegrating marriage, and this causes you to lose it.
David realizes that his Shepherd is anointing his head with oil.
Remember what the anointing meant for David. Anointing with oil signified the king or priestly position. The Messiah is the anointed one.
Do you remember Samuel anointed David to be the next king of Israel? 1 Samuel 16:13
Then the men of Judah anointed him, making him king of Judah II Samuel 2:4 and again as king over Israel II Samuel 5:3
The anointing with oil is a symbol that God is for us. Romans 8:31.
David realizes from his Shepherd that he is still who God decided to make him, not who his enemy would call him or claim he was.
You, too, are who God says you are. You are what God says more than what you think, feel, or others may say or do.
Remember who you are in Christ. You are a new creature, loved and adored by your Father, accepted right now in heaven, complete, and oh so much more.
Meditation
Are you hurting? Know this: You have a Shepherd who has been through it all victoriously. He knows you and what you are going through. “I AM” is not out of touch with your reality. He understands and sympathizes. He shares your feelings. Your hurt touches His heart.
He stands by with heavenly medicine. Right now, He is helping you even though you might not see it or feel it in the middle of your pain. He never leaves you.
Do not worry that your failures, your past, or your sin have cut off His love. It is impossible. Love is His very nature. God is love. I AM is good. The Bible says that over and over.
Your Shepherd never leaves, never gives up, and never quits on you.
Remember who you are. You are a child of God. He is your Abba, your daddy. He loves you more than a mother and Father ever could, and He will not stop.
The Father loves you like He loves Jesus, His own Son. John 17:23.
Just because you are in the valley of the shadow of death and it seems all is going wrong, that doesn’t change the truth. I AM, Yahweh, the LORD is your Shepherd, and He will meet every need.
No matter what you are facing, your Shepherd stands ready to help and make a difference.
He reminds you of who you are. You are in Christ. You are a new creature, loved and adored by your Father, accepted right now in heaven, complete.
You do realize that our Shepherd has poured in the oil of the Holy Spirit on us. He lives in, prays for, touches, and heals us. You are never alone. The Holy Spirit of God has made you His permanent residence. That is the oil poured on you right now.
