Today, I want to challenge you with what I believe is the highest goal of every believer, every son or daughter of God: we want to know God.

Too often, we live lives centered around ourselves. What’s in it for me? What am I supposed to do or not do? We put ourselves at the center of our relationship with God.

But God made it clear that the real key to life is to know Him.

Eternal Life

Consider what Jesus said about eternal life. Notice that it wasn’t something way out in the future, waiting for us after a lifetime, but something for right now. He wasn’t talking about the “by and by,” but the present moment.

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
John 17:3

Eternal life is more than heaven. It’s a relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ. We’re not talking about academic, head knowledge, but a profoundly intimate relationship we experience now.

Jesus prayed, in essence, “I want these disciples to know You and Me.” Who is God? What is He like? How can I walk with Him every day?

I want to know Him personally, not just know about Him. I want to see Him, not just pictures of Him. I want to hear from Him.

I’ve been married for over fifty-two years, and my goal is still Betty. I want to know her, love her, and know her love. I’m not interested in just talking about her nearly as much as I am in being with her. You know what I mean. So, how is it with your relationship with God?

Bragging

Do you realize that God actually wants you to brag or glory? He just doesn’t want you to brag about your wisdom, strength, or finances. The Almighty Creator, our Father, wants you to boast about knowing and understanding Him.

Can you imagine that? God says, “Let this be your goal, not to get rich, not to have influence, not to be intellectually advanced, but to know and understand Me.”

“Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23–24

Knowing God is the most important thing you can do with your life. God delights in our seeking to know and understand Him.

Notice what Jeremiah said you would know if you truly knew God: that He is a God of lovingkindness.

Lovingkindness” means far more than we understand in our culture today. It’s one of the most powerful words in the Bible. It describes God’s nature, His covenant loyalty, His faithful love, His constant kindness, and His devoted grace. It speaks of God’s faithfulness in relationship with His people.

He “exercises lovingkindness.” That’s what He does. He keeps His word, shows mercy, and does good even when it costs Him. That’s not emotions; it’s active, loyal love. That’s the God we serve.

Then Jeremiah mentions “judgment,” and that’s where we often get off track.

We think of judgment as punishment, but in Scripture, it’s much more. It’s about relationship and restoration. It’s how God actively governs, decides, and sets things right. It’s not condemnation, it’s God restoring order and protecting what is right.

The most beautiful picture of judgment is Jesus Himself, who came not to condemn the world but to rescue and restore it. He came to seek and save that which was lost, to set things right again.

Then Jeremiah mentions “righteousness in the earth,” because that is what makes God happy. He delights in them.

Righteousness means bringing things back to the way God designed and desires them to be. Sin entered and destroyed the relationship between God and man. But God is faithful. He keeps His promises. He is actively working to bring His creation back to Himself.

He desires to return everything to a right relationship with God. We see righteousness as, “I’d better do right.” But God sees it as, “You can’t and won’t do right, so I’ll become a man and do right to restore everything as it was meant to be.”

The Most Important Goal in Life

“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.” Philippians 3:8–10

Paul understood it. More important than anything he had or was, he wanted to grow in his knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. There was no cost too high. Paul wanted to know Him.

It’s more than just believing in Him; it's knowing Him intimately.

Are you counting that relationship as the most important in your life?

Intimacy

“And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”
1 John 2:3

When you know God, you’ll want, out of love for Him, to do what He wants. I’ve been married a long time, and I never act or move without thinking about how it will affect my wife, what she wants, and what will make her happy. That’s how it should be with God when He’s constantly in your thoughts.

The highest goal of every believer is not success, comfort, or even religious activity., but to know God intimately, to know Jesus Christ personally, and to be transformed into His likeness by that relationship.
