I have spent many years sitting with people who feel perpetually stuck in a mid-term exam they didn’t study for. They wake up with a knot in their stomach, wondering if they’ve done enough, prayed enough, or "witnessed" enough to stay in God's good graces. They are exhausted because they view the Christian life as a series of tests where the grading scale is impossibly high. Consequently, they live in a state of low-grade anxiety, waiting for the moment God finally loses patience with their performance.

If that is you today, I want to invite you to take a very deep breath. When I was facing Stage 4 Kidney Cancer and later battling for air during a brutal fight with COVID, I didn't have the energy to pass any tests. I couldn't even stand up, much less "perform" for the Lord. In that weakness, the Holy Spirit whispered a truth to my heart that changed everything: You are not being graded; you are being held. Specifically, the DNA of Grace reveals that you cannot fail a test that Jesus Christ has already passed on your behalf.

The Exhaustion of Spiritual Performance

Most of us were raised in a world that operates entirely on merit. For example, in school, you get the grade you earn. In your career, you get the promotion your "metrics" justify. Even in our families, we often feel like we have to act a certain way to keep the peace. Therefore, it is only natural that we bring this same "performance" mindset to our relationship with God. We treat the Bible like a syllabus and our daily lives like a classroom where the Teacher is watching every move with a red pen in hand.

However, the Gospel is not a classroom; it is a family room. Religion tells you that you are an applicant seeking admission to the school. Grace tells you that you are a son or daughter who has already been given the family name. When you realize this, the pressure to "pass the test" evaporates. Austin Gardner has learned through fifty years of ministry that the only way to find true satisfaction in Jesus is to stop trying to impress Him and start learning to rest in Him.

Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

This verse is the ultimate "pass" grade. If there is no condemnation, then there is no failing grade. If you are "in Christ," His perfect score is now your score. You are not waiting for a final evaluation at the end of your life to see if you made the cut. In Christ, the results are already in.

The Great Exchange: His Record for Yours

One of the most profound truths of the New Covenant is what I call the Great Exchange. It is the heart of the DNA of Grace. We often think that God just "forgives" our sins, which is wonderful. But He does so much more than that. He doesn't just wipe your slate clean; He writes Jesus’ perfect record onto your slate.

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Think about the weight of that statement. Jesus took your "F" so that you could have His "A+." Meanwhile, He took your failure so that you could have His standing. Consequently, when the Father looks at you, He doesn't see a struggling person trying to pass a test. He sees the perfect righteousness of His Son. Therefore, you are not behind. You are not being graded. You are being held in the secure grip of a Father who is already well-pleased with you because of Jesus.

Mercy is Running Toward You

I love the phrase "Followed by Mercy." It comes from the beautiful promise in the Psalms that goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives. Specifically, that word "follow" in the original language doesn't mean a casual stroll. It means to pursue or to hunt down. It is the image of God’s love actively chasing you, even when you are trying to run the other way.

Mercy is not trailing behind you with a list of conditions. Instead, it is running toward you with intention. When I was at my lowest, I realized that I didn't need to find God; He was already right there, having pursued me into the darkest valley of my life. God’s mercy is after you right now, ready to bring real grace and honest hope to your situation.

Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”

This is your security. You don't have to look over your shoulder to see if judgment is catching up to you. Judgment was handled at the Cross. What is catching up to you today is Mercy. What is surrounding you right now is Grace.

From Individualism to Belonging

Our modern culture is obsessed with individualism and self-definition. We are told that we are whatever we make of ourselves. This is a heavy burden to carry because it means our identity is always "under construction." If we stop producing, we stop existing.

But in the Kingdom of God, your identity is not something you build; it is something you are born into. You stop asking, "Who am I becoming?" and start asking, "Who do I belong to?" This shift changes your entire worldview. For example, a branch doesn't struggle to be a branch. It simply abides in the vine.

John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Satisfaction in Jesus comes when we stop trying to "do" and start "abiding." The fruit of a holy life isn't something you squeeze out of yourself to pass a test. It is the natural overflow of being connected to the Life-Giver.

Living From Victory, Not For It

Everything in the Christian life flows from identity to behavior, never the other way around. Religion says, "Change, and then you will belong." Grace says, "You belong, now you will change." Specifically, you are not living for victory; you are living from a victory that has already been won.

I remember talking with a young leader who was paralyzed by the fear of failing God. He felt like every mistake was a strike against his spiritual record. I told him, "Son, you can't fail a test you've already passed in Christ." That is the peace that comes with relocation. You have been moved from the kingdom of "Try Harder" to the kingdom of "It Is Finished."

Resting in the Finished Work

If you feel like you are struggling today, if you feel like you are not measuring up, I want you to remember that God is not disappointed in you. He is not measuring your worth by your consistency. He is measuring your worth by the value of His Son.

Rest doesn't come after you fix yourself. Rest comes first. It is the foundation from which we live. When you know you are loved exactly as you are, you finally have the freedom to become who He created you to be. You are not a project; you are a person deeply loved by the Creator.

If you are ready to stop the striving and start the resting, I encourage you to take The Big Leap of Faith: Believing God Loves You Exactly As You Are. It is the first step in understanding the radical mercy that is chasing you down today.

Common Questions About Mercy and Grace

How do I stop feeling like God is grading my every move?
The shift happens when you realize that Jesus already took the final exam on your behalf and received a perfect score. You are now standing in His record, not your own. When you focus on His finished work rather than your daily performance, the "grading" mentality begins to fade into the peace of sonship.

What does it mean to be "followed by mercy"?
In the original Hebrew of Psalm 23, the word for "follow" means to pursue or chase. It means that God is actively hunting you down with His kindness and forgiveness. Even when you feel you have failed, His mercy is right there, pursuing you with the intention to restore and hold you.

Can I lose my standing with God if I fail significantly?
Your standing is based on the DNA of Grace, which is a spiritual relocation into Christ. Just as a child cannot "un-child" themselves from their parents through bad behavior, your position in the family of God is secured by the blood of Jesus, not your consistency. He is a Father who holds His children, especially when they stumble.
